SAMOA-HAWAI'I FLAG DAY CELEBRATION
A Week before 2nd Saturday of August every year at Keehi Lagoon Park.
Events and schedules may change from year to year. 
Open to the Public... 
 

1.     Aufaipese i Vi'iga Fa’aleagaga  (Spiritual Song Fest)

        Choirs from churches on Oahu ,and neighbor islands ,come together  with their gospel song(s) for this event. It is
        amazing to see and to hear choirs of different denominations come together and praise God with music and song.

 

2.     Tauvaga Po Pese ma Po Siva  (Song & Dance Group Competition) 

        Our Hawaiian Cousins called it "Halau". People come together in groups of  100 or more members  represent a village,
        churches, schools, companies, clubs, islands or special guests from South Pacific Islands. These groups bring with
        them the songs and dances that tell a story, explaining: a historical event; government issues; or about someone
        important, usually politicians. 

 
3.     Tauvaga Au Kirikiti (Cricket Games)

        This is the single largest event in the Samoa Hawai'i Flag Day (SHFD) celebration. There are two different tournments.
        The Open Invitation and The International Championship of Men Teams Division and Women Teams Division.

        Open Invitation Tournament: All SHFD registered Cricket Teams may compete in this tournment.

        International Championship Tournament: All International Champion Teams  registered in the SHFD Tournament
        may compete in this Tournament and or the Open Invitation Tournament if they wish.

 

4.     Volleyball: Co-ed Grass. Time and Place TBA

        Youth volleyball tournament. 

 
5.    
Tosoga Maea (Tug of War)

        Invitations are given to registered organizations that participate in any of the Flag Day activities. Team members for this
        event is 15. 

 
6.     Fa’aliga a Fa’aili (Band Festival)
        Date, Time & Place: TBA.

7.     Tauvaga Siva Taupou (Traditional Dance)

        Age group from 16 Years or Older are welcome. 

 
8.     Lauga Fa’a Samoa (Samoan Orator Speech)
        Daily or Nightly: TBA
        Subjects: Taeao; Fa’alaniga  o Nu’u ma Alalafaga o Samoa; Fa’alaniga o Samoa.
 

9.     Ta Polo (Golf Game)

        Time and Place is TBA

        Company Sponsors are welcome. Door Prizes include R/T to Samoa  


10.   CULTURAL WORKSHOPS & DEMONSTRATIONS

        Gaosiga o Siapo (Tapa Making); Lalaga Ato (Basket
        Weaving); Sioga Afi (Fire Making); O’aga Popo
        (Coconut Husking); Fale Aitu (Comedy); Fa’aluma
        (Clown) Meataumafa (Food Demonstration); Ailao
        Naifi Oti (Fire Knife Dance); Wood Carving & Ta
        Tatau (Tattooing).
 

11.    AVA O LE TAEAO (AVA CEREMONY) TBA

        Matais of The Council of Samoan Chiefs and Orators gather for the Ava Ceremony each new day. Sometime the Ava
        Cerenomy is for  new chiefs, bestowing a matai title which will be witnessed and observed by many people. 

 

12.   SIX MEN & WOMEN CANOE RACE "PADDLE OF THE HEARTS" 

        Keehi Lagoon, Aug 13, 12:30 Noon. 

        Open invitation to the first 7 Canoe Clubs:
        Division: 16 - 18/Boys and Girls
        Division: 19 - Up/ Men and Women
        Mix Masters: 40 - Up.
     
       Team members must be sponsored by a  registered canoe club.  Awards will be presented to all the five divisions. The
       combined scores from 5 divisions will be the home of the Perpetuated Chiefs Award.

Please kokua (tautua) our SHFD by wearing our Ribbon for $1.00 donation throughout the week. You may find these ribbons at 7-11 Stores around Oahu, available in late July,  or from the committee at the Keehi Park. Thank You! Mahalo!  Fa’afetai!
